DCH
One of York’s best restaurants, the DCH sits opposite one of Europe’s most magnificent Gothic cathedrals, York Minster. Not that you have to look outside for stunning views. Inside, digital wallpaper displays magnified images of the historic stonework. And polished oak tables are impeccably arranged with beautiful big wine glasses and ergonomic designer cutlery. Star of the show, however, is Andrew Bingham award-winning seasonal Modern English cooking. Expect wonderful local produce such as Yorkshire beef, York blue cheese, and fish from Grimsby and Whitby.

Rose and Crown
Its latest reincarnation as a gastropub made the Rose and Crown a hot spot in the attractive old village of Sutton on the Forest in York. Multi award-winning head chef Adam Jackson, a pupil of Michelin star-holding chef Jeff Bland, is now happily at home in the kitchen serving up impressive, often sublime, Modern British seafood and local meat, game and poultry dishes - light lunches by day, and a la carte main from £10.50 by night. Daily specials are invitingly chalked up on boards. The setting is equally as beguiling. You’re welcomed into a modern darkwood bar surrounded with wooden tables, mismatched upholstered chairs, and a blazing fire at the other end of the oak floor. Very professional service.

The Blue Bicycle
Located near York Minster, The Blue Bicycle has become one of York's dining landmarks. With a French style English menu heavily weighted towards fish dishes, an unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere, professional French waiters, and charming decor, it is no wonder this eaterie is often packed. The downstairs is particularly romantic and atmospheric -- it is allegedly a former brothel and the decor is true to it's blue period. Menu favourites include the chef's own spicy fish cakes with pineapple salsa, and grilled scallops with sweet chilli sauce to start, followed by a steaming bowl of monkfish and prawn chowder, or tuna with red onion, lime and coriander salsa.

The Piano Restaurant
Set in an elegant Georgian mansion with a modern noughties twist – The Piano Restaurant inside York's Churchill Hotel is a stylish spot for romantic meals and chic dinner parties. With a live pianist four nights a week and an AA-Rosette-worthy British menu, this restaurant is a gourmet escape from the hustle and bustle, and is the perfect place to unwind with loved ones. Drinks in the Piano Bar, which overlook the garden, is the perfect way to start the evening and the dining room – with its dark wooden furniture, plush carpets and fresh flowers - has a luxe-yet-cosy vibe. Star dishes from Glenn Morrill's kitchen include the peppered venison steak and the arctic roll for pudding.

The Tanglewood
Situated on the outskirts of the historic city of York, off of the A64, The Tanglewood restaurant and bar allows you to indulge your more theatrical side. Spacious and lively, The Tanglewood retains the welcoming charm of a typically British pub but with its contemporary décor and creative food provides the full restaurant experience at the same time. Bright red walls provide a backdrop for a colossal collection of film and theatre posters and memorabilia from the 50s, 60s and 70s, a real talking point and reason enough to visit, even without the extremely high quality of The Tanglewood’s food. Though traditional in many respects, the chefs at The Tanglewood strive to provide their guests with something out of the ordinary, so not only are ingredients high quality and locally sourced, but creativity and modern methods are employed for sumptuous dishes with a gourmet edge. Visitors are invited to relax and linger during their visit, a well stocked bar featuring excellent wines and a selection of beers a good reason to arrive early or remain late.
